Write a poem (or prose piece) to be read aloud. Focus on rhythm, rhyme, clarity, concision, theme, strong images, emotion, and performance.
Use some of the poems you heard in the Spoken Word video to guide you
You may write on a topic of your choice, below are some ideas:
Possible Themes and ideas:
Politics - revolution (the first poem), oppression, war (Suhair's poem about treatment of Arabs after 911)
Race/Culture- stereotypes, ignorance (2 Asian girls angry) , mixed race (puerto rican/Jewish girl), the outside vs. the inside,
Personal- personal trials, anger at being misunderstood (Fat Girl's Blues), anger at being devalued (what do you make?), being in love (last poem- examples of being in love)
Personification poem- choose an abstract idea and include specific, concrete examples of that idea (ie "they call me DRAMA")
Story Poem- write a poem that tells a story or inserts your story into a well known one: examples would be the "Shine swam on" poem, and the poem about the crackhead mother
POEM STARTERS
Ask a question, answer it throughout your poem
Repeat a line or chorus
"shine swam on"
"they call me drama"
"I wanna hear a poem"
Personify an idea
I'm the....They call me ___(idea)
Exemplify an idea
It's the kind of ... kind of love
You will revise these and read these aloud on friday
