Write a one-page journal entry in the perspective of Odysseus. Include one quote from the text.
Write a 2-chunk Schaeffer paragraph
Below is an example:
Topic Sentence (subjective): Odysseus is heroic because he shows good leadership skills.
Concrete Detail (quote/example proving the topic sentence): For example Odysseus tells his men, "All hands aboard; come, clear the beach and no one taste the lotus, or you lose your hope of home"
Commentary (subjective explanation of how the quote proves the topic sentence) This shows Odysseus is able to resist the temptation of the lotus flower, unlike his men and convince them to return to the ship and stay on course. He is able to take charge and lead his men away from something that harms them all.
Concrete Detail (quote and example proving the topic senetnce) : On Ismarus, after defeating the men of the island, Odysseus said "Back and quickly! Out to sea again!".
Commentary (subjective explanation of how the quote proves the topic sentences): While the other men wanted to stay on the island and enjoy the spoils of war, Odysseus was smart enough to see that they should leave quickly in case more men on that island should show up to fight Odysseus' men.
Concluding Sentence: Odysseus is a hero because he tries to lead his men to do the right thing, even if it's easier and more popular to do the wrong thing. He doesn't succomb to temptation and tries to lead his men away from the bad things that distract them from their goal of getting home.
