She’d been here before, it all looked familiar, but different. The shelves were strewn every which way, but every so often there would be one full of food, a dusty box of Pop-Tarts here, cans of Chef Boyardee there, and every now and then she’d be lucky to find Twinkies or box of white Cheddar Cheez-its, she loved those things.
The lights flickered and every so often she heard a scuffling. Rats? Maybe, she wasn’t sure. She wasn’t even sure how she’d gotten there.
She’d been heading back from class at Chabot, when Bob had called her and said he had a client for her. She was hesitant to meet him because she had stopped working for Bob long ago, when she realized what cruel piece of shit prick he really was. But for some reason, she’d agreed, there was a desperation in his voice and the soft spot she had for her old friend had made her weak. Or maybe that’s just the kind of mood she was in, she’d been a wreck lately, with school and work and the death of Chocolate, her horse. It had been all her fault, she should’ve given the horse up. She knew she couldn’t take care of him in the in law apartment she was renting in the Oakland hills and when the owners of the house returned from Narnia, a new fancy resort in the Caribbean, they were none too happy to see Chocoalte eating their rosebushes and daffodils. Chocolate had been sent away last month, and just yesterday, she’d gotten a call that Chocolate was dead. Her day couldn’t have been worse…
