3. Look at Writer’s Inc Books p169- Go over classic plot lines
The Quest aka The Hero's Journey: A main character sets out on a journey or on a search for something and experiences various adventures and challenges. The "hero" ultimately returns to his/her home or wher eteh story began having gained or learned something. ("epic" movies and stories and Greek myths follow this storyline. Famous stories you may know are Star Wars, The Odyssey, and even- in a comedic parody, one may even say Harold and Kumar go to White Castle)

The Intiation: A main character (usually a young person) is face with a new situatiom that tests his or her abilities, values, beliefs, and views of the world or him/herself. How the character deals with the situation determines the direction of their life. (Many sports stories follow this storyline)

The Union: A romantic relationship or close friendship develops between two people that are forbidden from seeing each other because of their parents, society, an authority figure. The couple or duo fight to stay together and face challenges that try to keep them apart. (Romeo and Juliet, The Notebook, are a few examples. the relationship need not be romantic)

The Choice: The main character is faced with a difficult decision near the end of this type of story. Throughout the story the character is being pulled  by each side. Often the two sides represent two aspects of the character's personality or life and choosing one or the other determines what kind of person he/she will become or what his/her life will be like. The climax of this story is when the character must finally make the decision. (Boyz in the Hood and Batman: The Dark Knight were examples suggested by students)
Now try coming up with your own

4. Story Structures- Classic Modern Story Structure- ABDCE

Action (begins en media res with something happening)
EX:Tyrell playing football and gets injured (in scene)

Backstory (goes into summary or flashback providing the reader with details that brought the characters to where they are at beginning of story à NOT background on everything about characters. This part will also make it clear to the reader what’s at stake for the main character)
EX:Flashback to what’s lead up to this game, show recruiters coming to see him

Development (returns to the “present” action and moves forward building tension and complicating the conflict)

EX:The big schools have lost interest in him. Tyrell begins to unravel. Smaller, no-name schools looking like only option. Risky rehab program that’s really difficult and not for sure, but if he does it and succeeds he could walk on to his dream school team.

Climax (highest point of action where the character is faced with some decision or something happens in which
EX:Tyrell has to decide whether to go for the risky rehab, or the sure thing no name school.

Ending

EX:Tyrell being resigned and settling for it – flash forward, where we see Tyrell as middle aged and looking back on the decision
