Creative Writing 4-6 pg Short Story Submission RD due Mon 3/26

First Draft of Story due Monday- typed or written neatly in ink

4-6pgs

Graded on:

Narrative arc/ Plot –

Is the beginning interesting and engaging?

Is it clear early in the story what’s at stake for the main character?

Is there conflict from the beginning and does it build and develop as the story progresses?

Is there enough exposition or backstory to sufficiently understand the main character and the current conflict?

Does tension and conflict build to a climax?

Does the ending show the result of the climax?

Is the end surprising, but inevitable? Does it make sense and satisfy the reader, either resolving the conflict or show growth or change in the main character?

Character

Is the main character round and well-developed?

Are their motivations or what’s at stake clear?

Are a variety of characterization techniques used?

Scene, Dialogue, and use of implied meaning

Is the bulk of the meaning in your story SHOWN (not told) through action, dialogue, description?

Does dialogue serve at least 2 functions (plot, subtext, character)?

Does description use sensory and specific detail?

Style, Clarity and organization

Is it sufficiently clear (not confusing) what’s happening or are ambiguities done intentionally to serve a purpose?

Is it free of grammar and spelling errors that distract from the understanding of the story?

Creativity, Overall impression

Is the story unique and creative?

Is the story emotionally engaging, entertaining, or interesting?
