CW: lecture notes and hw from yesterday

·       Describe a place you know well and have visited often

·       If you could be anywhere right now, where would you be? Describe that place in detail.

·       Imagine a fantasy world. Describe it in detail

2. Review Key Terms





Setting-

where and when the story takes place



Mood-

the emotion or state of mind that the reader feels



Tone-

emotion the state of mind or attitude the author has towards the subject



Character-

person (people) in the story

Characterization- how you get to know a character (speech, actions, reactions of other characters, explicit info from narrator, plot, setting, relationships)



Plot-

the action in the story (what happens in the story on the surface); how the conflict gets complicated or resolved



Inciting incident-

the event that sets up the story, gets action in motion, introduces problem [something at stake for the character]



Climax-

the turning point in the story; the highest point of action



Resolution-

the problem is “solved”; things even out, come together



Conflict-

problem(s) in the story that drive the action

         

Internal Conflict (person vs. self)

- problem is within the character

 (ie. Depression, grief, addiction, dealing with past)

         

External Conflict

-problem outside the character

Types of External Conflict

Person vs. person- fight w/ friend

Person vs. society- discrimination

Person vs. nature – surviving in the wild, health

Person vs. supernatural – witch, ghost, monster

Person vs. circumstance/ fate- luck

Person vs. machine- person vs. technology

1. Send one person from your table to grab your group’s folders

2. Put your HW from last night on your desk to be stamped

          3. What conflict do you think you will write this week’s memoir about? What happened in this conflict? Who was involved (who are your “characters”)? What was important or meaningful or interesting about this conflict?



3. Finish reading the excerpt from Warriors Don’t Cry



4. Discuss plot structure and conflict

How does the author build tension and suspense?

What is the inciting incident? The climax? The resolution?
